Al Jaber acquires Demag Twin
Al Jaber Heavy Lift has recently acquired the world’s highest capacity mobile crane with a 3,200-tonne lifting capacity, making it one of the few companies in the region to boast of such lifting capabilities.

“The Terex Demag CC8800-1 Twin is an innovative modular crane system based on the multiple utilization modules of the CC8800-1,” says a spokesman for the company. “The name Twin refers to the impressive double boom which increases the lifting capacity of the CC8800-1 by a factor of almost four in certain configurations whilst retaining the ability to pick and carry loads at the highest capacities. Similarly, the luffing fly jib and the superlift mast are also doubled up and connected by cross-bracings and all winches and hook blocks are provided in pairs.
“The new crane is extremely compact for its capacity and is designed to make dismantling, movement between projects and re-assembly quick and easy,” the spokesman adds.
Work starts on Indigo Optima 1, 2
UAE-based property developer Indigo Group has started construction on two developments in the Central District of International City.
Indigo Optima 1 and 2 are two, mid-rise building developments (ground plus 10 floors), currently providing the only business space solution within the International City Master Community phase 1.
Indigo confirmed that the main construction contract has been awarded to Bhatia Constructing Company. The total value of the combined projects is Dh180 million ($49 million).
Imdaad’s FM solutions for DMC
Dubai Maritime City (DMC) and Imdaad, both members of the Dubai World Group of Companies, have recently signed a partnership agreement for Imdaad to provide strategic facilities management (FM) solutions and a portfolio of comprehensive services for the largest maritime city in the world.
Under the terms of the agreement, both parties will work closely together to establish a strategic asset management plan based on the highest safety and quality standards, ensuring investors and clients get premium value and optimum returns for their investments, according to a report.
DMW wins US award
The United State Department of Commerce has honoured the UAE Military Works Directorate (DMW) for pioneering the use of district cooling technology in the Middle East to meet its requirements.
The award was presented at the District Cooling Symposium organised by the Middle East Chapter of the US-based International District Energy Association (IDEA) held in Dubai, last month.
“The UAE DMW was Tabreed’s first and is still our single largest customer that uses cooling services totalling more than 120,000 tons of refrigeration (TR),” said Dany Safi, CEO, Tabreed district cooling pioneer.
Al Geemi wins Sorouh project
Sorouh Real Estate has awarded a Dh465 million ($126.63 million) contract to Al Geemi and Partners to construct the roads and utilities infrastructure at Shams Abu Dhabi. The world-class integrated development is Sorouh’s Dh25 billion flagship project on Reem Island, once complete, will offer 55,000 residents the perfect combination of modern comfort and natural living.
The contract will cover the construction of the main loop road and internal roads network and will also include all internal utilities network.
KM launches Tamani Arts Offices
Dubai-based KM Properties has launched its Tamani Arts Offices, Artisan Cluster, the company’s latest addition at the Business Bay.
Tamani Arts Offices is a ground-plus-20-storey tower, and forms an integral part of KM Properties’ larger Artisan Cluster near Burj Dubai, says a spokesman for the developer.
The Artisan Cluster, with a built-up area of approximately 2 million sq ft, consists of clusters including hotels, commercials towers and residential buildings.
The project is designed by Terry Farrell and Partners.
BNC product finder crosses 10,000 mark
The BNC Product Finder, launched in October 2005, has officially crossed the 10,000 products listings mark, says a spokesman for the company.
Designed exclusively for the construction industry, the BNC Product Finder, gives users various search options to look for building and construction products. Users access the system to identify multiple suppliers for a particular product or brand, as well a multiple manufacturers of a particular product.
The BNC Product Finder provides information about manufacturers and agents/distributors in the entire GCC.
“The BNC Product Finder is unique in combining the features of a product directory with those of a brand directory,” he says.
Another exclusive feature of this state-of-the-art new age information service is that it is cross-linked with a company database and a project database, which makes it possible to find multiple suppliers for a particular product and/or brand to evaluate a product’s project references.
Bids invited for Dolphin pipeline
Dolphin Energy has invited tenders for the design and build of the Taweelah to Fujairah Gas Pipeline (TFGP) project.
The 240 km, TFGP project will be 48 inches in diameter and will be one of the longest and largest overland pipelines in the UAE, says a spokesman for Dolphin Energy.
The TFGP will link Dolphin Energy’s gas receiving facilities at Taweelah, on the coast of Abu Dhabi, with the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (Adwea) power and water desalination plant at Qidfa, in Fujairah.
Bids for the TFGP design and build project are due by January 31 next year and the award is likely to be made during next summer, with site work expected to begin during third-quarter 2008.
Nine contracting companies that have been invited to bid include Al Jaber Energy, UAE; Consolidated Contractors Company, Greece; CPECC, China; Dodsal, India; Petrojet, Egypt; Snamprogetti, Italy; STG, Russia; Techint, Saudi Arabia; and Technip, Germany.
DM finalises designs for new parks
Dubai Municipality (DM) has finalised designs for three neighbourhood parks in Al Barsha 2, which will offer the area’s residents close to 5.5 hectares of open space to relax and unwind.
Construction of the parks, each with an area of over 1.5 hectares, was slated to begin last month and is expected to be ready by October next year.
BSEL launches $544m project
BSEL Infrastructure Realty, a fully-owned subsidiary of Indian realty major BSEL Infrastructure Realty, has launched a Dh2 billion ($544.58 million) residential project in Ajman’s Emirates City.
The project, Jawahir Al Emarat, will comprise seven towers named BSEL Pearl, Fayrooz, Kahraman, Almas, Emerald, Sapphire and BSEL Ruby, said a spokesman for the developer.
The company’s debut project will offer one of the single largest residential clusters comprising 5,000 apartments.
Each tower, will rise up to 50 floors.
EBS set for capacity expansion
Emirates Building Systems (EBS), one of the largest suppliers of pre-engineered buildings (PEB) and hot-rolled steel structures in the local market, is targeting an increase in production capacity of over 75,000 tonnes annually following the completion of its factory expansion.
EBS is a subsidiary of Dubai Investments Industries, the industry arm of Dubai Investments.
The company has been involved in major projects such as the Muscat City Centre, Dubai Investments office blocks, The Tower on Sheikh Zayed road, Kuwait Trade Centre and several industrial structures.
Being a specialised manufacturer and supplier of pre-engineered and structural steel buildings for institutional, commercial and industrial sectors, the ISO 9001 and 14001-certified company also offers complete project engineering services as per contractual specifications.
GDS in MotorCity contract
Gulf Dynamic Switchgear (GDS), a wholly-owned subsidiary of M’Sharie, the private equity arm of Dubai Investments, has recently been awarded a Dh12 million ($3.26 million) contract for the supply of low-voltage distribution boards for MotorCity Uptown Area 2, a freehold master-planned neighbourhood with residential apartments, amenities, schools, swimming pools, park areas, sports facilities and retail outlets.
Recently, GDS had announced that it will provide distribution boards for several projects, including the Emirates Industrial Panel Factory in Dubai Investments Park; a residential building for Al Owais in Sharjah; a commercial building in Abu Dhabi; and 10 buildings in the Al Raha development in Abu Dhabi.
Dubai outlines green criteria
The Dubai Executive Council’s Committee for Green Buildings has outlined green building criteria for government and private buildings in Dubai.
This is part of its initiative to ensure a healthy and environment-friendly lifestyle across the UAE. The new rules will come into effect from early next year.
The criteria, which are applicable to new buildings, will result in 30 per cent energy savings required for cooling and air-conditioning; nine per cent savings for lighting and six per cent for heating water. The new guidelines will also achieve up to 30 per cent water conservation.
