RAK plans advanced materials research centre

01 December 2007

A state-of-the-art 6,000 sq m building is currently being designed by Consolidated Consultants – Jafar Tukan Architects in Ras Al Khaimah as part of the emirate’s plans to host an advanced materials research centre.

Construction of the project is expected to commence in early 2008.
A flagship programme for advanced materials research in the Middle East, the Ras Al Khaimah Centre for Advanced Material (RAK-CAM), was launched last month.
The establishment of RAK-CAM will position Ras Al Khaimah as a key contributor to the long-term technological development of the Middle East, by emerging as a global leader in advanced materials research that addresses critical issues in areas such as alternative energy sources, construction, water purification and environmental preservation, said a spokesman for the centre.
The project will also provide educational and training opportunities for aspiring scientists and engineers from both the UAE, and internationally.
In addition to pursuing ground-breaking research on advanced materials, the centre will carry out research in support of local industries and spawn new business opportunities in the form of start-up companies.
The scope of RAK-CAM will embrace interdisciplinary materials science in the broadest sense.
RAK-CAM will comprise a director, an associate director, eight research scientists, and several visiting professors. These personnel will be supported by permanent technical and administrative staff, as well as post-doctoral researchers and graduate students.
